Welcome

Sleep

Dear Colleagues:

It is my pleasure to welcome you to the Lassonde Institute of Mining. The Lassonde Institute of Mining is an interdisciplinary research institute at the University of Toronto. It was created to be at the forefront of leading edge research across a spectrum of mining activities and to train graduate students and professionals in mineral, mining and process engineering. It is an international centre for excellence in mining engineering, encompassing mining, civil, materials and chemical engineers, geophysicists, geologists, geochemists, and environmental scientists who undertake research that crosses traditional disciplinary boundaries.

A combined $9-million investment from Dr. Pierre Lassonde and Goldcorp Inc., a gold mining producer, helped fund the construction of the Goldcorp Mining Innovation Suite ($20-million mining research and innovation centre at U of T) and provide scholarships for students. Goldcorp’s gift supports an academic and research facility within the Innovation Suite for graduate students and post-doctoral researchers. The Canadian and Ontario governments also each pledged $5.5 million toward the centre

The Lassonde Institute has two major research thrusts. The first thrust focuses on developing a fundamental understanding of the earth’s response to human activities. The second thrust is to provide innovative solutions to real-world problems faced by the mining and mineral industries.

The Lassonde Institute is comprised of several research groups and laboratories at the University of Toronto. These groups cover the fields of mineral exploration, mining engineering, rock engineering – including rock physics, rock fracture dynamics and seismology – computational geomechanics, mineral process engineering, backfill engineering and extractive metallurgy. Faculty members conduct research in their field of expertise to promote advances in science and engineering, to the benefit of industry and as a means to train and support graduate students

Regards,
