Director, Lassonde Institute of Mining Lands Two Leadership Roles Within National Technical Society
Professor
John Hadjigeorgiou was recently elected to the Council of the Canadian
Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM).
Professor
Hadjigeorgiou was also elected as Chair of the Rock Engineering Society
(RES) at its Annual General Meeting in Montreal on May 22, 2011.
Founded
in 1898, CIM is the leading technical society of professionals in the
Canadian minerals, metals, materials and energy industries. Its Rock
Engineering Society, a constituent society of CIM since 1984, promotes
the development and application of mining industry geomechanics to
support safe and economically viable extraction.
Lassonde Principal Investigator Receives NSERC Strategic Project Grant
Professor
Torstein Utigard is one of seven researchers in the Faculty of Applied
Science & Engineering at the University of Toronto who received a
Strategic Projects Grant from NSERC. The program aims to encourage
collaboration among academic researchers, industry and government
partners. Professor Utigard and his team will research on selective
sulfation roasting of Ni concentrate to minimize off-gas pollution, in
partnership with Vale Inco Limited and Xstrata Nickel.

Professor
John Hadjigeorgiou was elected to the Board of the Canada Mining Innovation
Council (CMIC). The CMIC is comprised of a consortium of industry, academic and
government leaders. Its mandate is to strengthen the competitiveness
of a responsible Canadian mining industry by renewing a commitment to
mining research excellence across the country.
New Mining Centre Receives $20 Million in Funding and Donations
The
University of Toronto announced a combined $9-million investment
from mining entrepreneur Pierre Lassonde and Goldcorp Inc., a gold
mining producer, to help fund the construction of and scholarships for a
new, $20-million mining research and innovation centre at U of T.
Mr. Lassonde has stated his intent to make the centre one of the top five mineral institutes in the world.
